world. This phenomenon between languages is known as code switching. Code
switching is the one of phenomenon that cannot be avoided in the classroom
interaction. This study used qualitative approach to know the phenomenon. This
study aims to focus on investigating of teacher’s code switching in clasroom
interaction during teaching grammar. It also deals with the types of code
switching based on Poplack’s theory as cited in Hamers and Michael. The
researcher found that all types of code switching occured during the classroom
interaction. To investigate the types of code switching, video recorded was used in
the classroom. In this case, the type mostly used by the teachers is intra-sentential
code switching, it was used 67 times, it is about 55%. The second type used by the
teachers is inter-sentential code switching, it was used 53, it is about 43. 4%, and
followed by extra-sentential code switching, which is done only twice during the
classroom interaction and it is about 1. 6%. The researcher also found the
teacher’s reasons of doing code switching in classroom interaction based on
Crystal’s theory as cited in Skiba, there were: (1) inability of teachers in
expressing him/herself when explaining the lesson to the students; (2) to establish
the closer relationship between teachers and students; (3) to convey the message;
(4) to manage the class. The interview was recorded using audio recorder to avoid
the mistakes in teacher’s answer. For this particular research, the interview was
analyzed and interpreted to be concluded, the interview revealed that the teacher’s
reasons of doing code switching during the classroom interaction is to facilitate
English teaching and learning.
