This paper mainly aims to analyze the students’ error on using simple present tense in descriptive text and finding out the highest component in percentage of errors because
the students often find difficulties in using the kind of tense especially in simple present
tense. This study was conducted under the consideration that simple present tense plays important rules in writing descriptive text. This paper has three objectives. First, it is aimed at finding out the kinds of error on using simple present tense in descriptive text
made by the students of MTs Assyamsuriyah Cibadak. Second, it is aimed at finding out
the percentage of students errors. Third, it is aimed to knowing the highest component in percentage of errors. The population of this study was the students of MTs Assyamsuriyah Cibadak which consist of three classes; they were VII, VIII, and IX class.
The total number of the population was 106 students; out of which 24 students were
choosen as the samples. Random sampling was used to collect the data. The instrument
the writer used is a writing test consisting of an outline in writing descriptive text. The
students’ errors on using simple present tense in descriptive text were classified and they were also counted to finding out the percentage of errors, and knowing the highest
component in percentage of errors. The writer classified the errors into three categories.
They were be error, non-be errors, and adverb of frequency errors. The writer divided be
errors into two groups of errors, they were: omission of be and wrong form of be. While
in non-be errors, she divided it into 3 groups of errors, they were: the use of be before
verb, – s form errors and other kinds of verb errors. And the last types of error are adverb
of frequency. The percentage of each error were as follows: be errors 38%, non-be errors
56% and adverb of frequency errors 6%. It is concluded that non–be errors is the highest
component in percentage of errors. Based on the results of the research, it is suggested
that the students of MTs Assyamsuriyah Cibadak should be given intensive exercises on
non-be verb on using simple present tense in descriptive text. It is quite necessary for the students MTs Assyamsuriyah Cibadak to be informed about the results of this study, so that they can improve their teaching learning process.
