EXPLORING ENGLISH FOR FOREIGN LANGUAGE STUDENT’S METACOGNITIVE
STRATEGIES IN SPEAKING ACTIVITIES

Metacognituve learning strategy is important in speaking. It has three stages,
including centering learning, arranging, and evaluating. This study is trying to
investigate students’ metacognitive strategies in speaking and the obstacles they
face in implementing the strategy. The respondents of this study is ten students of
the third grade of senior high school of Islamic Boarding School in Bogor. The
insturument used in this study is questionaries and interviews which are developed
based on the concept of metacognitive strategy proposed by Oxford (1990). This
study found that the student aplly three kinds of metacognitive strategy, namely
centering learning, arranging learning, and evaluating learning. The most frequently
used strategies are centering and evaluating, while arranging shows less percentage.
The obstacles that the students found are that some friends of them who still don't
want to be invited to speak English in their daily lives. Based on this study, teaches
are recommended to pursue students to use metacognitive strategy study more often
by giving them more opportunities to apply different kind of metacognitive
strategies.
