Intelligence comes from the Latin verb “intelligere”, which means “to
understand”. Individuals differ from one another in their ability to understand
complex ideas, to adapt effectively to the environment, to learn experience, to
engage in various forms of reasoning, to overcome obstacles by taking thought.
Although these individual differences can be substantial, they are never entirely
consistent: a given persons’ intellectual performance will vary on different
occasions, in different domains, as judged by different criteria.
There are many factors that can influence students’ reading comprehension
skill. According to Larry, et al that there are five factors identified as the primary
determinants of reading comprehension they are; background experience,
language abilities, thinking abilities(intelligence), affection and reading purposes.
Based on the data analysis, there was positive correlation between students’
intelligence and their reading comprehension skill. The writer found a different
result between the score of IQ and reading comprehension skill, where the mean
of the IQ score was 107 and reading comprehension score was 70,5. By
comparing both means, it can be concluded that the r found is 0,825 whereas r
table is 0.320 at 5% and 0.413 at 1% level of significant (ro>r t). The data were
analyzed by using statistical formula. It means that there is very significant
positive correlation between students’ intelligence and students’ reading
comprehension skill.

comprehension skill. It is known that the high intelligent students can get better
score of reading comprehension than the others. Because intelligence has
important role toward reading comprehension. If the intelligence is low, the
students will have difficulties in their understanding, but if the students’
intelligence is high, they will be better in their understanding.
