This research explained students’ motivation factors in learning English grammar
as an EFL in senior high school. Motivation is the heart of the learning process. The
purposes of the study are: to investigate Bogor students’ intrinsic and extrinsic
motivation factors in learning English grammar and to investigate how motivation
factors can influence the senior high school students in learning English grammar.
The researchers used a descriptive qualitative approach in this research. Then the
methods in this research were interview, and questionnaire. The results of this
research showed that senior high school students in Bogor feel that English
grammar is a difficult subject, but they have motivation in learning English
grammar. There are several intrinsic motivating factors for senior high school
students in learning English grammar; enjoyment, interest, challenge, skill
development, and skill development. On the other hand, there are several extrinsic
motivation factors for senior high school students in learning English grammar;
qualification, getting a job, pleasing the teacher/parents, and avoiding punishment.
The conclusion in this research reports that students’ intrinsic and extrinsic
motivation can influence their learning process, especially in learning English
grammar. From this research, it can be concluded that intrinsic and extrinsic
motivation should be available at the class for the learning process.
