Abstak

Exploring Students’ Learning Strategies in English Speaking Skills during Online Learning

This article explores students' learning strategies in English speaking skills during
online learning. The purpose of this research is to know the kinds of learning
strategies in English speaking skills; Direct Strategy and Indirect Strategy. This
study uses a qualitative method; exploratory research, to describe in detail about
the various learning strategies in acquiring English speaking skills. The
instrument that the researcher used in this study was an interview. Direct
interviews conducted with focus groups by several participants. This study
involved students from Bogor high school and had gone through a period of
online learning. The results showed that the direct strategy was the most used by
students. Direct strategies consist of memory strategies, cognitive strategies, and
compensation strategies. Memory strategies are mostly used by students with
audio and visual media, cognitive strategies are used through the analysis of a
text, and compensation strategies are used to understand the meaning of a
sentence. Researchers hope that in this study the reader can find out various kinds
of processes or learning strategies used by students.
