Among the skills that must be possessed in the 21st century is critical thinking.
Critical thinking skills can be trained by participating in debate practice. Not only
that, the students should also develop their metacognitive knowledge to help them
gaining significant improvement. This research aimed to find out the extents of
metacognitive and critical thinking factors play parts in debate practices and to
reveal how debate practice promotes students’ metacognitive and critical thinking.
In this study, the researcher used a qualitative study as the research method with ten
students from one class of English department. In this study, the researcher used
two main instruments; questionnaire and interview. This research found that Debate
practice positively promote metacognitive and critical thinking. Metacognitive
factors involved in debate practice are monitoring, directing, managing and
problem-solving. While critical thinking factors involved in debate practice are
observation, experience, reflection, reasoning and communication. The study also
revealed that debate practice begins from making preparation and ended with
evaluation which belongs to monitoring in metacognitive factors. While during
debate practice, metacognitive factors implemented are directing, managing, and
problem-solving. On the other hands, all critical thinking factors such as
observation, experience, reflection, reasoning and communication are all required
in conducting debate practice.
