Strategies and Their Speaking Achievement
Abstract
Speaking skills are important part of the curriculum in language teaching, and this
makes them an important object of assessment as well and learning strategies can
help students in learning a foreign language more effectively make it faster, easier
and more convenient. The objective of this study was to know whether there is
significant difference between students’ achievement in speaking among
metacognitive, affective and cognitive learning strategies. This study used
quantitative approach and causal comparative as the design of the study. The
sample of this study was 34 students of second semester academic year of
2016/2017 in speaking course at Ibn Khaldun University. The students’ learning
strategies score was obtained from the students after they filled out the
questionnaire about it. The questionnaire adopted from SILL version 7.0 for Non
Native speaker by Rebecca Oxford consist of 18 items with 5 likert’s scale rating.
For the students speaking achievement, the writer got it through documentation
score from the speaking lecturer. From the data the result revealed that there is no
significant difference between students’ achievement in learning speaking among
metacognitive, affective and cognitive learning strategies.
