Opening questions in teaching reading comprehension is as an introduction
for the students in order to derive the core material or text. It can make the
students focused and have imagination toward the text that will be received. In
other words, the students have one perception of concept about previous material.
Teaching reading comprehension can be make enjoyable by throwing questions to
the students, and let between them interaction each other. This will create good
condition in teaching reading process. Though reading is an easy skill, it can make
the students bored if the teacher is not creative in developing student’s interest.
Student’s interest in learning leads to good teaching learning process.
Through this research, the writer intended to find out whether opening
questions give good effect toward students’ achievement on reading
comprehension. The writer used the experimental method and took the eighth
grade of SMP PGRI Citeureup as the sample.
The study has proven that opening questions give good effect toward
students’ achievement on reading comprehension, they were being active and
enthusiastic. This is signified by the fact that the mean of students score by
opening question is (87.75) better than the mean of students score without
opening question (76.75). By using the t-test formula, the result showed that t
counted or t-computed 4.64 was higher than t-table on two tail test with ? = 0.05
is 2.021.
