TRANSITIVITY ANALYSIS OF GENDER IN INDONESIAN EFL TEXTBOOK
Nixelia Yushepine Tayudi
This research aims to determine the gender representation in an
Indonesian EFL textbook for junior high school students published by the Ministry
of Education and culture. This research uses a qualitative descriptive approach and
it is supported by a multidisciplinary approach namely content analysis. This
research utilizes the framework of Systemic Functional Linguistics developed by
Halliday and Matthiessen (2004) and the theory of gender asymmetry proposed by
Francis (2004) as a guide to find out gender issues contained in the textbook and to
find out whether the gender representation in the textbook is influenced by the
gender stereotypes in society. The result of the research showed that males are
represented as ‘masculine’, ‘capable’, ‘active’, and ‘adventurous’. Meanwhile,
females are represented as ‘expressive’, ‘nurturing’, ‘creative’, and as active as
males. There are no asymmetrical gender roles found in the textbook.
