Teaching practicum is an obligatory task to do and the activity of teaching
practice is held in the real classroom. This study investigated the types of English
pre-service-teachers’ anxiety, the causes of English pre-service teachers’ anxiety
and how to cope with it. Qualitative method was used to conduct this study, and
eight of English pre-service teachers who had conducted the teaching practicum
participated in the study. The research instruments adopted in this study were
close-ended questionnaires and interviews using audio recorded. The findings
revealed that four main types of anxiety were found in the English pre-service
teachers: ‘state anxiety’, ‘situational specific anxiety’, ‘trait anxiety’ and
‘language anxiety’. Furthermore, the causes of anxiety were grouped into six
categories: ‘preparation’, ‘classroom management’, ‘teaching experience’,
‘teaching context’, ‘supervision context’ and ‘teachers’ own personality’ that
appeared during teaching practicum. Another important finding was the strategy
to cope with anxiety such as ‘self-control startegy’, ‘preparation’, ‘keeping the
relationship’, ‘adaptation’ and ‘faced it and handled it’.
