Critical thinking skills are skills needed to face the global challenges of the 21st
century. This is explained through Law No. 20th of 2003 concerning the National
Education system, which states that critical thinking skills is capable of making a
person become a democratic and responsible citizen. According to Runco, (2014)
in speaking class, students need to develop speaking skills to be able to speak
fluently. Speaking skill is one of the four skills needed to communicate effectively
in any language, especially if the speaker cannot speak the mother tongue. To
improve speaking skills, learners need to improve their critical thinking skills.
One way to help learners develop their critical thinking skills is to apply a
learning model known as "Project-Based Learning". The purposes of this research
were to find out how far Project-Based Learning promote critical thinking skills in
speaking class. Therefore, documentation and semi structured interview were used
as data collection. The participants were 5 students that taken from 2 classes of
higher students in English Education study program in one university in Bogor.
This study used a qualitative approach and used a case study as the research
design. The finding results from the documentation and semi structured interview
was the Project-Based Learning could promote the critical thinking skills in the
speaking class, because from the Project-Based Learning the participants could
improve their critical thinking skills by doing some steps starting from collecting
data, analysis the data, and so on. Also the students can improve their analytical
thinking to recognizing between the valid and invalid sources.
