Vocabulary is a basic aspect that should be built up by students to understand English. Enriching vocabulary is important for the student because it can support them to master four skills. The teacher needs to apply the variety of technique in teaching English. One of appropriate techniques that can be used to increasing the students? vocabulary, it is by using direct method. With this method would find the different between the students using by direct method and students whouse the translation method to enhance their vocabulary. The sample of this study was 50 (fifty) students in the eighth grade of Mts. Nurul Qur?an divided into two classes, the first as an experiment class?1 and the second as control class?2. The experiment class received a treatment using the implementation of direct method and the control class with the implementation of translation method.The result of the study showed that the English vocabulary of the students who were taught by using direct method had better than score than students who were taught with translation method. It was shown that the mean of experiment class (83.32) was higher than the mean of control class (75.44).There was a very significance difference of the English vocabulary between the students who were taught by using direct method and those who were taught using translation method. It could be shown clearly by the t-observed (3.17) which was higher than t-table (2.70). Thus, using direct method had positive effect in increasing students? vocabulary at eight grade of junior high school. Key Words: Vocabulary anddirect method.
