Extensive Reading in Higher Education
ABSTRACT
Digital reading or the web makes reading easier, practical and affordable for
students. They can access the online library 24 hours a day. Especially on the
extensive reading course, where they are indirectly "forced" to read the reading
material provided by the teacher. The majority of students think that reading is an
unpleasant activity. Qualitative Research was applied as the research paradigm.
Case study was used as the research design. Six students and a lecturer were
invited as research participants in this study. The data I collected through
questionnaires and interviews. The findings showed that the application of these
characteristics can make the strategy of extensive reading successful in the
classroom. Six of these characteristics are that reading material must be
interesting and easy. The students choose the reading material they want, and get
information for pleasure. The use of mobile devices in the process of extensive
reading activities, gives positive affordances; mobile devices make it easier for
students to find reading material, helping students also in sharpening
understanding and insight into English, it is flexible, and interesting. It also makes
students have a good interest in reading. Most students prefer text types that are
descriptive text, narrative text, procedure text, recount text, and news text.
Meanwhile, for the genre of reading, most students prefer romance, horror,
thrillers, and education. Websites and applications that can help students improve
their extensive reading are Watpaad, BBC, Dreamreader, Breaking News English,
American English and Ello. Meanwhile, some of these applications students
prefer; Breaking News English, American English, and Dream reader. The way
teachers motivate students is by presenting reading sources that are easy to access,
free of charge, and have many interesting features.
