Abstak

ABSTRACT
Critical thinking skills is an important thing for students to be able to make the right
decisions and solve various problems in their lives. Meanwhile, almost every area
of human life requires problem solving skills. One of the methods to promote their
critical thinking skills is through digital storytelling. The purposes of this research
were to investigate the implementation of digital storytelling to promote students’
critical thinking and to find out the extent of this method in promoting critical
thinking. The participants of this study were seven higher education students in
English Education study program in one university in Bogor. This study used a
qualitative approach and photovoice used as research design. Therefore, photovoice
and interviews were conducted as the instruments of data collection. The findings
results from photovoice and interviews collected from participants resulted that
digital storytelling could promote students’ critical thinking. The reasons are, that
in the learning process with digital storytelling, they have to stay focused to be able
to comprehend the story and materials, as well as relate theories taught by the
lecturer earlier in the class. Based on the results, the use of digital storytelling in
learning could promote students’ critical thinking in focus, reason, inference,
situation, clarity and overview elements according to the indicator of critical
thinking. To sum up, since the implementation of digital storytelling has positive
responses from the students and is able to promote their critical thinking, this
method is beneficial to be implemented in the learning process.
