A Study on the use of Modal auxiliaries is very important in English
grammar. That is very cruciai when leaming written communication. The English
learners usualy find difficulties in using them in English learning. The most
common problem found by the learners is in choosing modal auxiliary with
certain meaning in the certain situation. It is caused by different functions modal
auxiliary.
The aim of this research is to know the error of the use English modal
auxiliary made by the fifth semester of FKIP UIKA students - English Education
Program. The research was conducted et Ibn Kha!dun University 2013/2014 academic year.
The sample is the fifth semester. There are four classes in the fifth
semester (A, B. C and S Class). The writer took 20 respondents as the sample.
The data collection was done by giving modal auxiliary test and an interview the
respondents for gaining the sources of errors. The erors found were identified,
classified and analyzed.
Among 14 types of modal auxiliary (prediction, obligation, ability.
advisability, probabilitv, past habit, prohibition, Iack of necessity, logical
conclusion, impossibility, request, offering, invitation and asking & giving
permission), there were 13 types of modal auxiliary found. Modal auxiliary of
probability is the most common error in the use of Modal auxiliary of this
research. It has 18.64%, errors. lt is followed by modal auxiliary of necessiity, and
ability wihich have 14.14 %, errors. After that, modal auxiiiary of impassibility has
10.93 %, errors. Modal auxiliary of absence of obligation has 8.68% erors.
Meanwhile. there was no error in modal auxiliary of invitation. Leaming context,
interlinguai transfer and intralingual transfer Where the source of the student's error
founded in this research. iin learning context, it was proved by seeing the students'
leasons in tire interviewscript. Most of the students only answer the test based
on their personal arguments and feelings. In intedingual transfer. the writer found
it in the use of modal auxiliary of obligation Meanwhile, in intralingual transfer,
it was found in the in the use of
