Title : The Factors Leading to Students’ Anxiety in Learning
English Speaking Skill

ABSTRACT

Anxiety is a feeling of frustation, being threatened, apprehension, tension,
and worry that play role in affecting students in learning language especially when
they speak in front of the class. The purposes of this research are to find out the
factors leading to students’ anxiety in learning English speaking skill, the dominant
factors perceived by students in speaking skill and the strategies to cope with
language anxiety in speaking skill. The type of the research is descriptive qualitative.
20 students were selected as participants. The data were gathered through
questionnaire (close ended questionnaire) and interview. The result shows that
mostly the factors of anxiety arise from lack of vocabulary (87,5%). The dominant
factors that perceived by student in speaking skill are lack of vocabulary (87,5%),
lack of preparation (83,5%), and fear of making mistakes (81%). The strategies that
used by the students to cope with their language anxiety in speaking skill are
preparation and most students use this strategy to cope with their language anxiety
