Learning strategy is an important thing in the learning process. In order to create a
more effective learning that makes students more interested, but most of strategies
focus on the teacher as the center of learning. So that many students feel bored
and tend to be inactive in the classroom. But there are many strategies that can be
used by the teacher not only teacher-focused but both that make students more
active. Therefore, a teacher required to be creative and innovative in using
learning strategies that encourage students to be active in the classroom. A
strategy that is recommended in this case is the KWL (Know, Want to Know and
Learned) strategy. In this strategy, not only teachers are required to be active in
the classroom, but students are also required to be more active. The purpose of
this study was to describe the implementation of the KWL strategy in the English
classroom. This study uses a descriptive qualitative method with observations and
interviews as the instrument of the research. The participants of this research are
English teachers in two schools in Bogor. Based on the research results, the
process of implementing the KWL strategy is divided into three steps, namely: K
(Know), W (Want to Know) and L (Learned). There are also some preparations
that must be done by a teacher in implementing the strategy. There are also
several benefits in implementing the KWL strategy, including generating student
motivation in learning. So, regarding to the result, KWL strategy is recommend to
be implemented by teachers in English classroom.
