Writing is an essential skill in academic and professional settings, yet many students
face challenges such as lack of confidence, poor grammar, and difficulties
organizing ideas. Although AI tools like Gemini AI are becoming popular in
education, limited studies have examined their use specifically among university
students in writing English. This study aimed to explore the benefits and limitations
of using Gemini AI in learning English writing skills. The research used a
qualitative case study approach involving 10 eighth-semester students who had
used Gemini AI for one semester. Data were collected through closed-ended
questionnaires and semi-structured interviews. The results showed that Gemini AI
helped students develop relevant ideas, organize paragraphs logically, use better
vocabulary, reduce grammar mistakes, and correct mechanics such as punctuation
and spelling. It also supported all stages of the writing process, including planning,
drafting, revising, editing, and publishing. Most students reported increased
confidence and writing fluency. However, some limitations were noted, including
occasional inaccuracy, limited support for critical analysis, and privacy concerns.
In conclusion, Gemini AI is a useful tool for improving English writing skills, but
it should be used wisely to ensure students still practice critical thinking, creativity,
and a full understanding of writing components and processes.
