The writer uses group discussion technique, because it could be effective
to be applied in teaching learning process especially in teaching of reading. In
group discussion technique, the students learn in a small groups consisting of four
or six persons and they should work together to learn the material, so they need to
help each other and learn from each other.
In this research, the writer try to find the differences between the students’
English reading ability who were taught English reading using a group discussion
technique and the students’ English reading ability who were taught English
reading without using a group discussion technique. To get the data, the writer
took the population of the research is the students of SDN Leuwimekar
Leuwiliang Bogor which consists 401 students. The writer chose one class as a
sample, it is fifth grade, there are 40 students and divided into two classes, there
are 20 students of experimental class (x1) and 20 students of control class (x2). In
the last meeting, the writer gave English reading test to both classes.
From the research that the writer has calculating the data by central
tendency (mean, median, and mode) and t-test to find is there any differences
between experiment and control class. It can be shown by the result of mean score
of the Experiment Class (85) compared to the Control Class (57). Then, it was
followed by t-test. The result of t-observed was higher than t-table (14.21 > 2.71)
with the level of significant 1%. It means that the different score of the
Experiment Class and the Control Class has proven to be significant.
It means that the group discussion technique is effective in the teaching of
reading, it is seen from the result of statistic calculation of both experimental class
and control class, it could be concluded that a group discussion technique is
effective in teaching of reading for the fifth grade of elementary school
