Language is crucial in everyday communication, and English has evolved into an
international language. Due to language barriers, Indonesian students have trouble
pronouncing English sounds correctly. Pronunciation is one of the speaking skills that
students must learn, and some students struggle to form diphthongs in English due to
cultural and behavioral differences in their home language. Improper pronunciation,
particularly the challenges of pronouncing English diphthongs, is another obstacle. This
study was conducted on twelve students at one of University in Bogor by using
qualitative research with a case study to describe the factors influencing students?
challenges in pronouncing English diphthongs. This research showed that the most
difficult and challenging English diphthong was [e?] sound. Students are influenced by
difficulty pronouncing English diphthongs when their mother tongue interferes, a lack
of expertise in English sound systems, and failure to use borrowed English words. This
study is supposed to help improve Indonesian students' pronunciation, particularly
diphthong sounds.
