This research is entitled “Improving Speaking Skill through News
Discussion”. Discussion is one of the methods used by the writer to improve the
students’ speaking skill. Through news discussion the writer hope that the students
can improve their speaking ability.
In this paper, the writer tried to research the effectiveness of news discussion.
This research is aimed at knowing the students’ capability in speaking English. The
study was conducted at SMAN 1 Parung. The writer took 40 students, 20 students as
experiment class and 20 students as control class.
In doing this research the writer used the quantitative data, and the result of
the research showed that the score of the students who were given news discussion
has significant differences from those who were not given news discussion. It is
proven by the result of mean of students speaking skill who were given news
discussion was 76, 8, and the mean of the students who were given news discussion
was 70, 5. And it is also shown by the distribution of sampling t-counted was11, 6
and t-table was 0, 126. It means that t-count > than t-table, because t-counted was
higher than t-table thus, improving the students speaking skill through news
discussion was effective.
