There are a lot of books available from various publishers at stores book. School
has it authority to choose the book used. Considering the appropriate book for elementary student’s age is a wise thing to be done by school. It also has to consider the demand of curriculum and criteria of good book related to four skills for elementary student. In order to know whether an English book for elementary student grade four written by Mukarto’s is relevant with curriculum 2006 and the criteria of good reading materials, the writer uses a check list table as an instrument for her research by comparing the Mukarto’s book with the demand of Curriculum 2006 and reading material criteria. This method result is aimed to give a glance to schools or parent about the appropriate book for the students, otherwise the purposes of learning language could be reached well. Even the writer found that most of the reading materials in Mukarto’s book are appropriate with the demand of Curriculum 2006, elementary student age level and the reading material criteria, unfortunately Mukarto forgot that the relationship between language and culture is deeply rooted. He did not involved English culture in any topic of reading material in his book. However, the entire of the reading materials on Mukarto’s book are completed by amusing, colorful and interesting pictures that can increase students’motivation and concentration in reading the text as stated on basic competence of curriculum 2006.
