Writing skill is one of the language competences that is important to be
mastered by the students. Writing is a skill concerning the kind of competence on
language product which is constructed from grammatical and lexical knowledge
that involves skills in planning and drafting as well as knowledge of language,
contexts, and audiences to share personal meanings and also an act of discovering
meaning. The activity of writing includes how to demonstrate basic transcription
details in such process whereby a person selects, develops, affanges, and
expresses ideas in units of discourse. This research vras about the implementation
of free writing technique affected the writing skills of students. The subject was
the first year students of SMK Windian Nugraha and this research was done in
October 2011. The purposes of this research were to identif,z the writing skill
improvement of the students who were taught using and without free writing
technique and to identi$z whether there was any significant difference of the
writing skill improvement between the students who were taught by using free
writing technique and those who were taught without it.
This research used experiment method, one of the methods in quantitative
approach, and covariance analysis was applied to identify whether there was any
significant difference between the writing skill of students who were taught by
using free writing technique and those who were taught without free writing
technique
The result of this research indicated that the writing skill of the students
who were taught by free writing technique was better than writing skill of the
students who were taught without free writing technique. It was shown by the
result of computation where the mean score of experiment class was 72.59 which
were higher than control class with 70.02. There was any significant difference
writing skill of students who were taught by using free writing technique and
those students who were taught without free writing technique. It was shown by
the F-counted is 4.04, which was obtained after the pre test controlled, higher than
F-table with df numerator: 1 and df denominator: 74 at 5% level of significance
is 3.89 or F-counted > F-table (4.04 > 3.89)
