Media is needed to help students learn English, especially speaking in an enjoyable
and easy way to use. An effective application such as Cake application is an
alternative media that help students in learn speaking skills. This study aims to find
out how students use the Cake application and how the students responses to the
use of the Cake application in self-directed learning to learn English speaking skills.
This research approach is qualitative with a case study design. Questionnaires and
interviews were used as data collection instruments. The subjects of this study were
high school students in BOGOR. The results of this study indicate that the use of
the Cake application helps students in promoting speaking skills, by using the
features found in the Cake application such as watching available videos, using the
speak feature to practice conversation, and adding vocabulary. The learning
techniques and resources are systematic and practical, and the Cake application may
assist students in managing their speaking abilities. The study confirms that this
application could be applied in teaching speaking, especially at the high school
level.
