The purpose of this research was to find out the barriers in teaching
English speaking to Thai learners and also to investigate the strategies used to
overcome the barriers. This research used Phenomenology study. The researcher
gained the data of the research through questionnaires and interview given to the
participants. The participants of this research were four Indonesian pre-service
English teachers who had done teaching practicum in Southern Thailand to
secondary stage learners. The findings revealed that the barriers faced by the
Indonesian pre-service English teachers in teaching English speaking to Thai
secondary stage learners came from two factors. Internal factors were native
language, age, exposure, pronunciation, attitude, and motivation for good
speaking English. External factors were teaching English speaking in large class
and teaching experience. Each barrier was connected to the available method used
in teaching speaking English. The strategies used by pre-service teachers to
overcome the barriers were mostly group work, classroom discussion, out-of-class
activities and warning as the strategies to overcome students’ misbehavior.
Key words: barriers in teaching speaking, internal factors, external factors,
strategies to overcome.
