This final project is about an analysis on the cartoon film “Dora the Explorer” as the media in enhancing students' vocabulary mastery, particularly for elementary school students. There are many various techniques and media to increase and build their interest in learning English. The elementary school students have different characteristics than those of adult; they easily get bored, they have short attention and concentration, but they are also imaginative and active. Therefore it requires a lot of creativity in choosing the suitable media based on their characteristics. The objective in this study is to find out whether a cartoon film is suitable for elementary school students, and to find out whether a cartoon film “Dora the Explorer” can enhance students' vocabulary mastery. It is expected that the result of this study can give contribution to the teacher, especially for elementary school teacher in enriching the teachers' strategy in teaching vocabulary. Moreover, this media can attract the attention and interest of
elementary school students.
The technique used for obtaining data; first, collecting data from many sources, they are selecting a cartoon film “Dora the Explorer”, selecting the criteria of media and principles of teaching learning vocabulary from some experts; Nation (1990: 53), Philips (1993: 126), Brown (1977: 78), Frost and Rowland (1969: 282). Second, analyzing data, the writer analyzes the material of a cartoon film “Dora the Explorer”, then analyzes the criteria in
selecting video (film), the criteria in selecting good media, the principles of audio-visual selection, and the principles of teaching learning vocabulary. Finally, the writer combines the material of a cartoon film “Dora the Explorer” with those criteria and principles together.
According to data analysis, it can be found that a cartoon film is suitable for elementary school students based on the criteria in selecting video (film) and Dora the Explorer's film has fulfilled the criteria in selecting film (video), the criteria of media, the principles of audio-visual selection and the principles of teaching-learning vocabulary, therefore this film can enhance students' vocabulary mastery, particularly for students of elementary school. This film also can increase the students’ attention and motivation in learning
vocabulary.
Therefore, teachers should always try to find better technique and media for their teaching. Based on the result, teachers can apply this film as a media in enhancing students' vocabulary mastery. Hopefully, through this film, students will feel enjoy, fun, and interest in learning English.
