This paper aimed at exploring the types of vocabulary learning strategies
(VLSs) used by the learners of English as a foreign language in Ummul Quro
Islamic Boarding School. It attempted to find out the strategies that used by the
students in learning vocabulary and also to find out which of those strategies
whether determination strategy, social strategy, memory strategy, cognitive
strategy and metacognitive strategy that students most preferred and also to know
the reason in used that most preferred strategy. This study conducted through a
descriptive case study. A sample of twenty students in Ummul Quro Islamic
Boarding School participated in this study. Interview and questionnaire as an
instrument of this study. The findings reveal that the strategies used by the
students in learning vocabulary were memorizing the words, vocabulary drill,
using handbook or vocabulary notebook as well did conversation. The results of
the questionnaire’s responses shows that cognitive strategies 78.5% ,as the most
preferred strategies used by the students in learning vocabulary.
