Abstak

Investigating the Inhibition in Speaking English faced by Students during Online Learning

The purpose of this research was to investigate the inhibiting factors in speaking
English during online learning and the strategy used by the students to cope with
the factors. This research is a descriptive qualitative research which used the design
of case study. The subjects of this study were 20 students from one of Junior High
Schools in Bogor. The data collecting technique of this research used questionnaire
and interview. The result of this research indicated that the students have some
inhibition in speaking English during online learning. Some inhibiting factors
influenced students in performing speaking during online learning namely (1)
psychological factors, (2) teacher teaching strategy (3) linguistic domain, and (4)
environmental factors. Based on the analysis of questionnaire, it is indicated that
90% have problems in motivation, 85% in the method and tools applied by the
teacher, 75% in teacher feedback, 60% in teacher ignorance, 75% in grammar, 70%
in pronunciation, vocabulary and topical knowledge, 60% in family condition. The
strategies used by the students include memory strategy, social strategy, cognitive
strategy, metacognitive strategy, and affective strategy. Based on the data majority,
students indicated that psychological factor especially lack of motivation and
teacher teaching strategy aspect is the most factors inhibits students in speaking
English during online learning.
