Advances in technology provide a massive opportunity for second language learners to
expose them to authentic materials (Beresova, 2014). This opportunity is potential to
facilitate literacy and language development of English. This study was aimed at
showing ways to utilize video-based authentic materials by young learners to acquire
listening and speaking skills. This study narratively investigated whether video-based
authentic materials could scaffold young learners’ listening and speaking skills. Based
on interviews and observations, this research collected data from a ten-year-old child
and his father. The child has never taken any English course. This study focused on
how videos-based authentic materials on the internet could influence the child’s
English skills, especially in listening and speaking. The findings revealed that video
based authentic materials had a massive impact on the child’s listening and speaking
skills. The exposure the child got was directly from native speakers he watched on
videos, making the child speak and sound like native speakers of English. The dictions
and phrases he uses when speaking are mostly derived from video-based authentic
materials. In short, video-based authentic materials could scaffold the child’s auditory
sensitivity, making him a better listener and helping him to understand the language
better. This study suggests that teachers and parents encourage young learners to utilize
authentic materials by providing them with or an access to educational cartoons,
animations, and films for exposure to the English language.
