The purpose of the study was to investigate senior English education students’
learning strategies in mastering speaking skill. This study used descriptive
qualitative case study as a framework for analyzing and collecting the data. The
qualitative data were obtained from questionnaire and interview. The participants
of the study were nine of eighth semester students of a university. They were chosen
based on their achievement in speaking skill. The result of study revealed that the
senior English education students used memory, cognitive, compensation,
metacognitive, affective and social strategies. The most learning strategies used by
the high achievement students were compensation strategies (3.67) and the least
was social strategies (3.13), whereas the mid achievement students mostly used
compensation (4.00) and affective strategies (4.00) and the least was memory and
cognitive strategies (3.50), while the low achievement students mostly used
memory strategies (4.17) and the least was cognitive strategies (3.38). From the
interview result, the researcher discovered that the use of strategies was individual
and not related to the level of student achievements. The students chose the
strategies in accordance with their learning styles and reasons.
