Vocabulary is an important component that needs to be taught in language
learning. Teaching vocabulary to young learners is not an easy thing, because
young learners like to play and are easily distracted. This study aims to find out
how Spelling Puzzle is used in teaching vocabulary and students' perceptions. The
researcher used case study design with the technique of data collection
observations and semi-structured interviews appears to be the method. This study
was conducted at Early Childhood Education in Bogor. Participants of this study
were 15 students from class B and 1 teacher. The first finding of this study shows
how the teacher use the Spelling Puzzle in teaching vocabulary for young
learners, there are; (1) The teacher instructed the students to divide them into
groups of 5-6 people. (2) The teacher gave five different puzzles to each group,
and the pieces were broken down into several parts. (3) The students were
instructed to reassemble puzzle pieces in an unspecified amount of time. (4) The
teacher asked each group to mention the vocabulary formed from the puzzle in
Bahasa. (5) The teacher then explained the English vocabulary, translations, and
how to spell it from the puzzle. (6) The teacher asked the students to repeat the
vocabulary and translations three times so that they could memorize them. (7) The
teacher gave a quiz about the vocabulary that had been learned. Then the second
findings are the students' perceptions of the use of Spelling Puzzle in learning
vocabulary are; (1) Students’ opinion there are happy, fun, good, easy, they like it,
and not fun because the pieces scrambled easily. (2) The interesting part of
Spelling Puzzle there are pictures, colors, and the picture of bed. (3) Most of
students memorized a half of vocabulary items. Therefore, the use of Spelling
Puzzles is an effective way to teach English vocabulary for young learners.
