Critical thinking is recognized as one of the desired learning outcomes in the
national standards of higher education in Indonesia. Various efforts are undertaken
to foster critical thinking skills among students, and one of these approaches
involves the implementation of summative assessment. By utilizing summative
assessment, educators aim to evaluate students' critical thinking abilities and
provide them with opportunities to apply their analytical and evaluative skills.
Therefore, this research aims to investigate whether the use of summative
assessment can scaffold critical thinking skills among college students and to what
extent summative assessment can promote critical thinking skills. Data collection
methods used qualitative approach with semi-structured interviews, and document
analysis. The analysis of interview transcripts was done by a predetermined
framework and its level. The findings indicate that summative assessment can
scaffold critical thinking skills. The results of the summative assessment also
indicate that the abilities of knowledge construction and decision making are at a
medium level. However, the ability of evaluating reasoning is still at the lowest
level. These findings provide a better understanding of the role of summative
assessment in scaffolding critical thinking among college students.
