Vocabulary plays an important role in learning English. There are many
activities that can be done to enrich the students’ vocabulary. One of them is using
semantic mapping activity. The aim of her research is to investigate whether
semantic mapping activity affects students’ vocabulary enrichment.
In this study, the writer used comparative method. In gathering the data,
the writer chose the second grade students of SMP PELITA Ciampea as her
population. She took two classes consisting of 48 students in each class as her
samples. They were divided into two groups, the experimental and control groups.
In the first meeting, the writer gave a pre-test to both groups with the similar
questions; to know their basic vocabulary. The experimental group was given
treatmnets of using semantic mapping while the control group was given other
treatments. The treatments were done in four meetings. In the last meeting, both
of them were given post-test; to know the enrichment of their vocabulary.
The result of the research shows that there was an effect of semantic
mapping activity on the students’ vocabulary enrichment. The t-test of the
research was 7.39 and the value of t-table of 94 on 5% (0.05) was 1.980 and on
1% (0.01) was 2.617. It can be described 1.980 < 7.39 > 2.617. The hypothesis of
the research was accepted. It is proved by the value of t-test that was higher than t
table on 0.05 and on 0.01.
