The objective of this research is to find out the effect of teaching
collocation on the students achievement in understanding descriptive text and to
analyze which one is higher, the students reading achievement taught by using
collocation or the students achievement taught without it. The study investigates
the effect of using collocation on the students achievement. The data were
obtained from SMP Bina Cendekia Leuwiliang Bogor academic year 2011-2012
and the sample is two parallel of first year grade class that consist of 15 students
in 7 1 (7 pangkat 1) and 15 students in 7 2 ( pangkat 2) therefore, all of the number sample is 30 students.
In collecting data of research the writer used objective test, in this test the
researcher asked the students to choose the best answer and essay. The conclusion
shows that the students achievement taught by using collocation is higher than
the students achievement taught without it. The average score of the students who
were taught using collocation was 74 and the average score of the students who
were taught without it was 68. Result in developing reading skill of the students
using collocation and the result of t-counted is 2.12 > 1.70113. Therefore, it
means that teaching collocation in understanding descriptive text is effective to
develop the students reading skill.
