Grammar is one of language components. The mastery of English grammar
is an important element and should be built in the early levels of education in
order to make the students be aware of the language itself in the future. Without
having enough understanding on grammar, it would be hard to master other
hngulge skill. So, the teacher should know the media, method and teaching aids
in teaching grammar. To help the students master the English grammar, various
media, method and technique can be chosen and applied. One of them is by
applying picture card. It is a way of improving students' understanding on
grammar in a personalized way while encouraging them to become autonomous
learner. Therefore, the writer conducts the research about Improving Students
Understanding on Simple Past Tense and Past Perfect Tense Through Picture
Card. 1-his piper is aimed at finding whether the application of picture card is
effective to be used for teaching gammar.
In this. paper, the writer used experimental quantitative research. This
research was conducted at SMA 1 kwitang, Pasir Muncang, Bogor The
population was 60 students and taken 40 students as the sample- There were two
groups in this research. They were experiment group and control group
improving students understanding on simple past tense and past perfect tense in
class taught by using Picture Card was experiment goup. And, those who were
taught without using Picture Card was control group.
Improving students understanding on simple past tense and past perfect
tense in class were taught by using picture card was better than those who were
taught without using picture card. It was shown by the test result of the students
wh6 were taught Engllsh grammar using picture card was better than of those who
were taught engtsh grrammar without uslng picture card. The mean of the
students who were taught using picture card was 77, conversely the mean of the
students who were taught English grammar without using picture card was 66. As
the result, teaching English grammar using picture card was effective to improve
students grammar mastery. There was a significant difference of grammar mastery
between the students who were taught using picture card and of those students
who were taught without using picture card. It was proved by t-observed which
was 2.214 and t-table which was 2.021. Ho was rejected because t-observed was
higher than t-table (t- observed < t- table).
