Pre-Service English Teachers’ Intercultural Awareness in EFL Classroom: a Narrative Inquiry

Pre-service teachers’ have to do teaching practice to be competence or understand
real world. In carrying out teaching practice, pre-service teachers must have
intercultural awareness because intercultural awareness helps pre-service teachers
expand their minds, increase tolerance, achieve empathy and cultural sensitivity,
increase understanding and capacity to realize intercultural ideas in cross-cultural
contexts in real time, especially if teaching students with differences culture. This
study attempted to investigate the intercultural awareness level of pre-service
English teachers, who conducted teaching practicum in Thailand, and influence on
learning process. This research collected the data through interviews and
documentation. The subject of this study are 2 students from who have done
international service learning. The result revealed that pre-service teachers are on
different level in several theme, which is influence they teaching process. Future
research are expected to dig deeper into other aspects of intercultural awareness to
improve related aspects for both teachers and students.
