INVESTIGATING STUDENTS’ DIFFICULTIES IN READING ARTICLES JOURNAL FOR ACADEMIC PURPOSES

This article investigates the difficulties of reading articles in journals and strategies
for overcoming those difficulties. The purpose of this study was to analyze students'
difficulties in reading articles in journals and to find out the strategies used in
overcoming these difficulties which had been analyzed from one class of final
semester students. This study uses a qualitative descriptive method to describe in
detail about the difficulties of students in reading articles in journals. To find out
the results of the analysis that has been done and to describe the difficulties of
students. The instruments that the researchers used in this study were questionnaires
and interviews. The results showed that the highest difficulty experienced was in
the form of grammatical arrangement in a reading, it was also found that the lowest
difficulty was in understanding determining main ideas and conclusions. Students
also said that they have strategies to overcome difficulties in reading articles in
journals in the form of reading important sub-points, reading abstracts first and
reading conclusions. The implications of this research can be improvements in
terms of reading articles, especially for lecturers on student reading performance.
