In this day and age, TikTok is not only used for entertainment purposes but also
academic purposes. Many students use TikTok as an additional medium to learn
English (Afidah, Sari, & Hanifah, 2021). Therefore, this study aims to find out the
advantages and challenges felt by students in using TikTok to learn English
virtually. Eighteen students majoring in English education from a private
university in Bogor were involved in this study. This study uses qualitative
methods with narrative analysis. This study uses preliminary data, questionnaires,
and semi-structured interviews as data collection methods. The results showed
that the average student uses TikTok for 1-3 hours daily. This research also shows
that TikTok provides students with several benefits in virtual language learning by
providing many resources for learning English and helping students improve their
English language skills. Students also said that sometimes they face challenges
when using TikTok to learn English virtually. The challenges faced can be in the
form of inappropriate content on TikTok, TikTok that can affect the health and
mentality of students, technical problems such as signals and quotas, and others.
This study concludes that TikTok is quite effective for students to use as an
additional medium in learning English virtually. This is because, on TikTok, there
are many useful features to improve students' English skills. However, students
will sometimes face challenges in using TikTok to learn English virtually.
