This research discusses the application of ice breaking activities as a strategy to
increase students' engagement in learning English speaking skills. This research
was conducted in one of the junior high schools, focusing on the application of ice
breaking techniques by English teachers in classroom learning activities. The
research method used was a qualitative approach with data collection techniques
through observation and interviews with teachers including observation sheets to
record the implementation of ice breaking activities in the classroom, as well as
interview guides to explore teachers' understanding and experience in applying the
technique. The results show that well-planned ice breaking activities that are
relevant to the subject matter are able to create a positive learning atmosphere,
increase students' confidence in speaking, and encourage students' active
participation during learning. The technique that is often used by teachers is the
planned technique because teachers plan the ice breaking activities in advance so
that they are relevant to the material to be taught. It can be concluded that the
implementation of ice breaking activities that are well planned and relevant to the
subject matter can increase students' engagement in learning English speaking
skills. This technique is proven to be able to create a positive learning atmosphere,
increase students' confidence, and encourage their active participation in class.
Therefore, teachers are advised to consistently integrate ice breaking in learning
and continue to develop creativity in designing activities that are appropriate to the
context of the material and students' characteristics in order to build a conducive
classroom atmosphere, reduce students' anxiety, and increase students' courage in
using English actively.
