ABSTRACT
Students have difficulty in their speaking skills because they feel anxious. The
problem is that they have various kinds of factors in speaking anxiety. This
study aims to find out about the factors of speaking anxiety and how to
overcome speaking anxiety in an English debate class in a program at a private
university in Bogor, Indonesia. The research design used in this study is a case
study design. Researchers used questionnaires and interviews to collect data.
The researcher recruited 10 students randomly from semesters 4 and 6, as
participants filled out the questionnaires, and 8 students conducted the
interviews. A close-ended questionnaires developed from Horwitz et al, (1986)
and interview question developed from Tanveer, M., (2019). The findings
revealed that students' speaking anxiety in English debate classes comes from
three main anxiety factors, namely communication apprehension, test anxiety,
and fear of negative evaluation. To overcome speaking anxiety, students must
prepare before performing, practicing with friends or mirrors, watching videos
on how to do debate, being confident even if they make mistakes during
presentation, and getting support from lecturers.
