This study exploring the motivational factors that encourage students to
boost their listening skills through TED Talks. The research was conducted on 20
students from the English Education Department at Universitas Ibn Khaldun Bogor
using a qualitative case study approach. Data were collected through close-ended
questionnaires and semi-structured interviews to explore students’ motivations and
the impacts. The findings show that both intrinsic factors (such as personal interest,
curiosity, and the desire for self-improvement) and extrinsic factors (such as
academic performance, peer influence, and lecturer recommendations) contribute
significantly to students’ motivation in using TED Talks. Participants expressed that
TED Talks provided diverse and engaging content, helped them stay motivated, and
offered accessible learning through features like subtitles and transcripts. The most
prominent motivational factors that boost students' listening skills through TED
Talks are intrinsic motivations, especially curiosity, self-improvement, goal-setting,
and content interest. In addition, the study reveals that TED Talks positively impact
students’ listening comprehension, vocabulary development, pronunciation, and
fluency. Some students also reported increased cultural awareness and confidence
when speaking English. The results highlight the value of TED Talks as an effective
and motivating tool in language learning.
