Reading is one of the skills of the English language, the teachers have to
know the problem of comprehending reading in order to help their students be
better reader. There are many methods used in teaching English, but the writer
only took two of them to be compared in teaching reading at SMPN 01 Cigudeg
i.e. the Grammar Translation Method and Direct Method. The writer would like to
compare the reading comprehension skill of the student taught by grammar
translation method with the reading comprehension skill of the student taught by
direct method.
To gaining the purpose of study, the writer did experiment. She divided
into two groups there are Experiment Group and Control Group. The Experiment
Group is treated by Direct Method and Control Group is treated by Grammar
Translation Method.
After investigating and analyzing the data the writer came to conclusion the
student reading achievement gained through Direct Method was better than
Grammar Translation Method, it is proven by the mean of Experiment group is
higher than control group where the mean of Experiment group is 76.66 and
control group is 71.60. Teaching reading skill through Direct Method was more
effective than trough Grammar Translation Method. It is shown by t-observed > t
table where t-observed = 2.484 and t-table = 2.2954.
