Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL) is a study of the relationship between language and its functions in social settings that considers language in terms of two characteristics: Systemic and Functional. Through the use of SFL, the researcher analysed the students’ final projects in 4th semester in the form of short story. This study analysed the realisation of interpersonal meaning in undergraduate students’ writing and aimed to reveal the mood types in the short stories writing by undergraduate student and find the dominant speech function in the short stories. The research design of this study is descriptive qualitative research. The data of this research is the clauses in the conversation between characters in the students’ short stories. The documentation method is used for the data collection of students’ short stories. Two research questions completed the result of this study; 1) The realisation of interpersonal meaning is realised through Mood and Residue which completed
the language features of story in narrative text with the most type of interpersonal meaning is declarative. 2) The dominant speech function found in the students’ short stories is Statement. The notion of Declarative – Statement in the exchange commodity means giving information which refers to the way the authors of the short stories conveyed the interaction between characters to deliver or entertain the readers by giving information. Thus, by applying the SFL approach to the mood analysis of interpersonal meaning and speech function in students' short stories, students might discover how language may be utilised to develop the social relationships and better communication in their written works. In addition, they can also comprehend how language would be utilised to convey the appropriate tone
and emotion in their work.
