This study examines the use of thematic progression in students' writing and its
impact on coherence and organization. This study aims to explore the dominant
patterns of thematic progression used in students' writing and the level of coherence
in students' descriptive texts. By analyzing 17 texts written by students at a senior
high school in Sukabumi, the study investigated how students connected ideas
through different patterns of thematic progression, including reiteration, zigzag, and
multiple theme patterns. From the analysis, the study gained insights into the
different levels of coherence exhibited by the students' writing proposed by Eggins,
which range from good, fair, less, and poor levels of coherence. To fulfill the
research objectives, the researcher used a descriptive- qualitative method by
utilizing the documentation. The results showed that the reiteration theme pattern
was realized 62 times (72.09%), the zig-zag theme pattern was the second realized
12 times (13.95%), and the multiple theme pattern was realized 7 times (8.14%).
Meanwhile, the students' coherence level was mostly ata fair level. This highlights
the importance of using thematic progression effectively as a means to improve
clarity and structural organization in written texts.
