There are so many problems in education world; i.e. the teachers, the
students, the materials or the methods. Based on reality, many educationalists try
to find out the way to solve the problems. Many students have difficulties in their
learning activity. Also the teacher, they cannot handle their students’ problems.
For most of the students, speaking is considered as the most difficult English skill
to be mastered. Strategies-based instruction is one of the teaching strategies. In
this paper, the researcher offered strategies-based instruction, which focused in
practicing naturalistically to solve that problem. Practicing naturalistically takes
the sources from the students’ their selves. Practicing naturalistically is used to
know the effectiveness in improving students’ speaking skill. Here, the researcher
took a descriptive text to limit the speaking area.
In doing this paper, the researcher used experimental method, and then the
sample is divided into experimental class and control class. Quantitative method
also used to identify the ability of the students’ speaking skill using strategies
based instruction. She chose 40 senior high school students of the first grade as
the sample.
The result of analysis data showed that the speaking skill of the students
who taught the strategies-based instruction in speaking descriptive text was better
than those who did not teach strategies-based instruction. It is shown that the
mean of the experiment class was higher than the control class (58.4<76.2).
Teaching speaking descriptive text using strategies-based instruction was more
effective than other technique which was used by the teacher at MTs Persatuan
Islam 112 Bogor. The result of the research was proven by t-test higher than t-
table (1.70<15.949)
